a big hello!

I’m Janet Wayland

Thanks for stopping by to check out my work. I hope that you like what you see, and that we can discuss in-person how my skills can help round out your team.

As a writer and UX person, there are two things that I love the most:

  1. Documenting stuff — anything and everything. I started out as classical technical writer before I moved on to helping the developers design and improve their applications and product features.
  2. Good solutions for users — I get a thrill out of being part of a team that delivers a really good product, that moment when it becomes obvious that even the little bits are done well and are helpful.

Here are some things that I’ve done that you might find interesting:

  • 2+ years working for NFCU Marketing. I am familiar with your culture, your members, your branding and your voice. I accomplished a lot on the Digital Media team.
  • 15+ years documenting software, writing design docs with illustrations, and evaluating requirements. Clarity in breaking things down to smaller bits, organizing data or content, and working with information architectures has come naturally to me.
  • 10+ years on UI/UX for NetIQ Operations Center. Our customers were Financial Institutions on the Fortune 1000 list. I started in the very beginning when it was Managed Objects, and continued through acquisitions by Novell, then NetIQ, and then Micro Focus. There, I worked on complex enterprise-level software in the Network Management and Service Management industries that solved some big multifaceted problems. Operations Center is an umbrella for a suite of tools and functionality that allows companies with disparate management systems, and various other sources, to manage everything from a single place, and then visualize how the state of things affect their business.
  • I’ve worked across Agile teams and I’m used to working with all kinds of folks you’d find around a product: CEOs, product managers, project managers, product owners, developers, marketing, services, customers.
  • I’ve helped create software from scratch — I’ve been known to take 2 sentences from a manager and sketch and spec out the basis of an entire product.
  • I’ve spearheaded the documentation efforts (instructional, user-help, user-reference materials) at multiple organizations. I worked with teams of writers and trainers. I’ve lead efforts to standardize and compile writing and style guides.
  • I’ve streamlined application UIs, as well as written microcopy, inline user-help, and error messages. Worked closely with developers at all phases of development cycle to validate and verify resulting products are polished up and released in good shape.
  • I’ve created fully-defined Personas by conducting user interviews and collaborating with all team members and stakeholders. I’m great a mapping user journeys. You should have seen my  illustration board that mapped the entire NFCU “Which checking account is best for me” wizard that we built for the website…really wished I had taken photos of that!

A short summary of what you’ll find in this portfolio…

NFCU Digital Media
I created a Digital Media Intranet for best practices and legacy information. I also assisted on larger, more technical projects.

BoomTown API
A fun project that benefited from lots of formatting, some technical writing, and a touch of usability testing with local programmers.

NetIQ Operations Center End-User and Developer Documentation
I managed and produced documentation for this enterprise-level solution for 12 years.

Configuration Management System
I provided a blueprint for this Web application…from a team-brainstormed list of feature requirements…to UI layout and strategy, messenging and labels, error messages and CSS code, and more.

NetIQ Operations Center (NOC)
An enterprise-level software suite that helps corporations to manage disparate network management systems. I provided UI/UX design for this solution for 12 years. It was a robust solution that solved very complex problems in super customizable ways.

CSC Cloud Style Guide & Proto-Personas
I assisted the developers in refining all components of the UI. I authored a style guide, to ensure that design elements are standardize and consistent, and give the programmers code samples they can copy and reuse.
